The swivel/rocker I am redoing with new upholstery was used across the back of the outer chair frame to secure the tufting twine for the 10 buttons upholstered into the chair back cushion. It worked out great. Generally, black stripe is used for seat backs, while red stripe is stronger and more suitable for structural support, often used for seat cushions.
Repairing furniture using jute webbing is a great way to go for small projects, skipping the fabric store. I reupholstered dining room chairs and upgraded the banding. Our black stripe jute webbing is a high-quality, super-strong webbing that creates a very strong seat, yet it's flexible and supple enough to use for chair backs, arms, and other areas where webbing is needed. It worked great for repairing the webbing on the bottom of our antique sofa.
Jute is the most common form of webbing material found in the suspension systems within furniture. This natural, vegetable fiber is spun into extremely strong bands used for furniture suspension. Our Jute Webbing is the perfect product for any craft or decoration, especially Upholstery applications. It measures 3.5" wide by 10 yards long and is made of 100% jute, tested for high quality.
Jute upholstery fabric is a durable material used to make sofas, chairs, and other furniture, often featured in its natural light tan color. Upholstery webbing is a strong, closely woven material used for making items from straps to belts, but within upholstery, it is mainly used for supporting chair seats. High-quality, heavyweight jute is used to provide support for the part of the furniture that has to accommodate the most weight: the seat.
Jute fiber is recyclable, stronger than cotton, and used to make coarser, stronger yarns for products like mattresses, bags, and carpet backing. When repairing with jute webbing, pull it taut toward the front of the seat, fold the raw edge under, and staple it in place on the chair frame. Then, push a clip through the other edge, fold the strip over the clip, and pull the clip around the metal portion of the chair to insert it into the slot.
